Known to the Maasai as the “Mountain of God,” Oldonyo Lengai is Tanzania’s most active volcano, standing at 2,962 meters (9,718 ft) in the Great Rift Valley near Lake Natron. What makes an Oldonyo Lengai climb so unique is its distinctive lava type—natrocarbonatite—which is cooler and gives the landscape an otherworldly black, moon-like appearance. The ascent is typically a challenging overnight trek to reach the summit for sunrise, offering spectacular views of the volcanic crater and the pink expanse of Lake Natron, home to millions of flamingos. The trek also provides a chance for authentic cultural encounters with the local Maasai communities.
